About Wicked StepBlog

Welcome to Wicked StepBlog.

Let me start by explaining something about the name. My little family of three was sitting at the dinner table the other night, when I announced that I wanted to start writing a blog.

“What’s a blog?” Kid demands, between mouthfuls of spaghetti.

“It’s a website where you write about things,” I say. “And I need to give it a name.”

After numerous earnest suggestions of calling it Flower, Butterfly and Rosalina, (?) I suggest to Kid that I’m thinking of calling it the Wicked StepBlog. Although Kid has been a major part of my life since she was too young to remember, it has only been in recent months that we’ve actually discussed what, technically, I am to her. Stepmom. It’s kind of this strange, clunky term that seems to suite neither of us, but, sort of a necessary technicality.

So I ask her, “What do you think ‘wicked’ means?”

And, pumping her fist in the air and spitting out little bits of spaghetti, she shouts, “Cool! Wicked means totally awesome!”

So there you have it. Much as Kid has reclaimed the word wicked, I have reclaimed the stereotyped role of stepmom into something more than that evil woman who married your dad and took over the house. Because, as I’ve learned over these past 4 years, kids are not born with a certain prescribed amount of love, which they can give to just one mom and just one dad. There is plenty to go around. And, while being a weekend parent often on the periphery of important decisions regarding the upbringing of said child presents its own set of challenges, it also the most rewarding challenge I’ve undertaken in my life thus far.

But this blog isn’t just about that stepmom aspect of my life. At this moment, in October of 2008, I am also a wife, daughter, sister, friend, grad student and graphic artist with a love of mountains, oceans, literature, photography, food and small plastic animals.

Um, that last part is sort of complicated though, so I’ll try to explain in future postings. Welcome.

the sentence where she pumps her fist in the air and sprays spaghetti out of her mouth and defines “wicked” is something i’m going to remember when i’m old.

A few weeks ago, I was absorbed in the picking of my bountiful raspberries and thinking about what perfect fall weather we were having. Outside in the big cedar chair “Mr Potts” was greeting the neighborhood kids coming home from school. I was looking forward to hearing their thoughts on him. A group of three boys walked by. I assumed Mr Potts could be in for an assult. Instead one of the boys said “I saw this yesterday. He is totally wicked!” I smiled to myself knowing that they liked him but I thought “he is hardly scary” Now I know they think he is “cool.”

    Great blog!
